Hair Loss

Hair is important to everyone's appearance and self-image. You'll probably feel shocked, anxious and angry when you're told you'll lose your hair as a result of treatment. Some people feel that this threatens their feelings of self confidence.

Many people find it helps to talk to the staff caring for them. Expressing how you feel about losing your hair can help you adjust to the idea. Talking to other people who have come to terms with their hair loss may also help.

Your hair will nearly always grow back once you have finished your treatment. An exception to this is mentioned later (see Hair Loss With Radiotherapy). This section provides information about:

treatment to prevent alopecia (hair loss)

choosing a wig and how to care for it

care of your scalp how to make the most of hats, scarves, make-up and jeweler We hope it will help you to cope with your alopecia and make the most of your appearance while you wait for your hair to regrow.

Effects of Hair Loss

It has been reported that 3 out of 5 men will suffer from some degree of hair loss before the age of 50. Women are not immune either and 1 in 4 will experience hair loss and thinning hair.

After menopause, women become even more susceptible.
